Walterboro, SC (WLTX) -- The attorney for USC freshman Trevor Stephens, arrested on charges of possessing five handguns in his Maxcy Hall dorm, spoke to News19 Thursday.

Stephens, 17, of Walterboro was arrested Tuesday on charges of unlawful possession of firearms on campus. Police arrested Stephens at his Maxcy Hall residence on campus Tuesday after they received a tip he was in possession of weapons. Original Story: Student Accused of Having 5 Guns in Dorm Room

According to Stephen's attorney, Margie Matthews, the family is shocked by the arrest. She describes Stephens as a happy-go-lucky, well adjusted, child. She tells News19 the arrest came as a surprise to the family.

"Everyone is totally traumatized. They are trying to be strong for Trevor. Trevor was excited about going to college. They are shocked."

Mathews says Trevor was number seven in his high school class at Colleton County High, adding he was well liked by his teachers and his fellow classmates.

"He is a very smart young boy. He is loving. He is an outdoors type of person. Everybody in this community is surprised and we know that it is a misunderstanding," said Matthews.

While she wouldn't comment on why Stephens was in possession of five guns, Matthews says she has known the 17-year-old his entire life and says he had no malicious intent with the weapons.

News19 asked the attorney: "can you shed any light on why he had these weapons in his room?" Matthews responded, "it is a misunderstanding I can tell you that. But beyond that I cannot discuss any particular facts of the case as you can imagine to protect Trevor and the investigation."

At his Walterboro home, Stephens parents refused to come to the door to answer News19's questions.

"As you can imagine this is a very traumatic experience for the family as well as Trevor. This matter has been, as far as the family is concerned, a matter where they fully intend to corporate with police as Trevor has already done," said Matthews.

Stephens attorney has requested a preliminary hearing, however that has yet to be scheduled. She tells me they are fully cooperating with the solicitors office and USC police. No trial date has been set.

The student has been suspended from the University and is currently not allowed back on campus.
