Columbia, SC (WLTX) - More than 200 dogs rescued from an alleged puppy mill in Edgefield are now being treated in Columbia.
The owner of the property--54-year-old Callie Abel--has been arrested on charges she ran an online dog breeding website for months.
The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office raided her property earlier this week. Officers say they found multiple dogs crammed together in tiny cages, and many of the animals had health problems, including malnourishment.
Officials said Abel had puppies of all breeds and sizes. Neighbors say the smell was horrendous.
The animals are currently at a temporary kennel in Columbia. Along with the dogs, the Humane Society also rescued 31 chickens, 12 ducks, 9 horses, 3 geese, 2 guinea hens and a parrot.
As for Abel, her charges are still pending and was released on bond Tuesday afternoon.
