Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The Artists For Africa project grew out of the experience of one member of the Columbia City Ballet, that has become an after school arts program for children in Africa's worst slums.

Cooper Rust, of the Columbia City Ballet, spent her summer volunteering with the project in Nairobi, Kenya, teaching dance to the children in Africa. "The needs are so great for the children of these slums. Their lives are so focused on survival, and yet, for those few hours in their lives, they become so like any other child around the world.

"In the dance program they get to become fairy princesses and princes; those in creative writing are encouraged to express their innermost creativity; and the young artists create drawings and paintings that are amazing in their natural ability."

Artists For Africa will be performed both Friday night and Sunday afternoon:

At the CMFA Art Space at 918 Pulaski Street in Columbia.

Friday, Sept. 21st at 7:30pm

Sunday, Sept. 23rd at 2:00pm
