MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) - A 60-year-old Mount Pleasant man has died after a three-hour standoff with police.
Capt. Stan Gragg says the man was shot shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday when he stepped outside and pointed a handgun at officers outside his house.
The Charleston County coroner's office says 60-yearold Richard Cathcart III died about 30 minutes later at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital in Charleston.
Officers had blocked off a neighborhood Tuesday afternoon after a man with a gun barricaded himself in a house. Gragg says the SWAT team fired when the man came out and pointed the gun at them.
Gragg says no one else was in the house.
Gragg says Cathcart taunted officers during the standoff but made no attempt to surrender.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
