Lexington County, SC (WLTX, AP) - A Lexington County attorney has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of extortion and mail fraud.
U.S. attorney Bill Nettles announced that Richard J. Breibart of Lexington is now facing 10 counts of violating the Hobbs Act.
Federal prosecutors say Breibart told clients they were either facing penalties from the IRS or possible criminal charges unless they removed as much money as they could get out of their bank accounts, investments and retirement accounts.
Authorities say Breibart put the money into his law firm's trust account and spent it on personal and business expenses.
Breibart's law license was suspended in June.
Bond was set at $100,000. If convicted, Breibart faces 20 years in prison on each count.
