Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Lexington County deputies have arrested a man they say hurt a 17-month-old boy.
Jason Daniel Sightler, 33, has been charged with inflicting great bodily injury on a child.
Officers say on September 26, Sightler threw the boy across a room a home, causing the child to lose consciousness. A warrant against Sightler goes on to say that he then put the boy in a bathtub to try and wake him back up. Deputies say he then picked up the child and shook the child forcefully, causing the boy's eyes to roll back into his head, resulting in seizure-like convulsions.
The child was taken to the hospital, where a doctor said the boy suffered a subdural hematoma, a type of brain injury, and was bleeding in his retina. Doctors said the injuries were consistent with someone who'd suffered blunt force trauma.
Investigators say Sightler was temporarily caring for the boy to help the child's mother. Deputies say the suspect and the mother are acquaintances.
The child has since been released from the hospital and is staying with other relatives.
