Newberry, SC (WLTX) - Now that the Gamecocks are ranked third in the nation fans are thinking back to the Black Magic season in 1984 when USC was ranked second.
"Those guys are talented," said former Gamecock quarterback Mike Hold. "I had a chance to go to the Georgia game and that's the best football team in the country to me. I don't just say that because I am a Gamecock I say it because it is real."
If anyone could point out how good this years team is and how they compare to the '84 team, it would be Black Magic quarterback Mike Hold.
"You talk about the '84 season heck they passed it last year. We have one record standing and that's nine wins in a row in one season and if they get through the next couple they are going to break that and we are all for that," said Hold.
Hold believes records are meant to be broken, but says they have a tough road ahead of them.
"The nice thing about playing those tough teams is that it keeps them focused, it keeps them in check. They don't have a week off and it will keep them focused and because of that they are going to be alright."
With the Gamecocks on the road against a tough team in a loud stadium, Hold says they need to take control of the game early.
"They are going to intimidate you from the time you get off the bus. They are going to line up from the bus to the locker room and talk about your mom and grandmother and you have to be prepared."
The '84 defense was known as the Fire Ants because of how they swarmed to the ball. Many would say this years team is very similar.
"Well we didn't have Jadeveon Clowney."
Hold wishes he could go back on the field as a player but says all he can do is cheer on the team from the sideline.
"We are hoping they will get the National Championship that we didn't get in 1984, thanks to Navy we didnt."
