Sumter, SC (WLTX) -- Highway 378 near Shaw Air Force Base has reopened following a chemical spill Friday morning.

Sumter fire officials report that at around 6AM a tractor trailer carrying a chlorine-like material had the trailer overturn near the base's entrance. Some of the hazardous liquid then leaked out.

As a precaution, both directions of Highway 378 were closed until hazmat crews can clean up the spill. Traffic was detoured onto Route 441. The scene has now been cleared.

The circumstances leading up to the spill have not yet been released.
