Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Columbia Police say a pedestrian was hit and killed Friday morning in downtown Columbia.

Officers responded to the corner of Taylor and Assembly Streets, which is in front of main branch of Columbia post office, around 7 a.m.

The vehicle did stop after the accident. Emergency crews transported the unidentified male victim to a local hospital, where he later died.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the victim as 54-year-old Alton A. Floyd Jr. of Columbia.

Police later cited the driver of the car for driving too fast for conditions. They say their initial investigation shows the driver had the green light and was traveling south on Assembly Street, crossing Blanding Street. Floyd was traveling west while crossing Assembly Street and did not utilize the crosswalk, according to officers.
