Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The Department of Revenue has had one of the biggest jumps in employment for a state department the past five years.
According to documents provided to News19 by TheNerve.org, an investigative website in the Midlands, the Department of Revenue has seen an increase of 70 employees over the past five years.
The total number of employee's at the Department of Revenue sits at 696. The department of revenue tell us the positions increased primarily in the areas of Collections and Field Auditors
We have been trying to find out exactly how many of those jobs added were IT or database management related; however, the Department of Revenue has not yet responded to our request on the number of IT jobs that increased.
Today we spoke with an associate professor at USC who specializes in cyber security. Dr. Csilla Farkas tells News19 while she doesn't know the specifics of the DOR system that was hacked, she believes all of the data should have been encrypted.
"Well I would like to know what kind of risk assessment was preformed on the computing resources," said Dr. Farkas. "And based on the risk assessment, what kind of security policies, procedures, were implemented that were eventually put in the system."
