Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The South Carolina Department of Revenue now says 3.8 million people are affected by the hacking of personal data from state computers.
Officials with the revenue department confirmed to News19 Wednesday the new number, which is 200,000 more than previously state.
Revenue Department Spokesperson Samantha Cheek said the 3.6 million figure released last month was an estimate.
In October, Haley and law enforcement leaders revealed that a Department of Revenue server had been breached by a foreign hacker. In addition to the Social Security numbers, it's estimated the thief took 387,000 credit card numbers.
The state is offering credit protection to people through Experian at no cost. People have until the end of January of 2013 to take advantage of the service.
