Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Voters in Richland County have approved a new penny sales tax increase.
Just after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Richland County election officials released the final vote total: 74,029 "Yes" to 64,684 "No."
COMPLETE ELECTION RESULTS
The race took almost a full day to get final results for because of problems with election machines--either too few of them, or ones that didn't work. Those problems led to long delays for voters, with some casting ballots after 11 p.m.
A malfunction in a scanner meant the final tabulation of results could not begin until mid Wednesday morning.
The penny tax is designed to provide funding for several projects throughout the county, including the local bus system. The measure failed to pass just two years ago.
