Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Kirkman Finlay has won State House District 75.
Final results released just after 6:30 p.m. Wednesday showed Finlay, a Republican, defeated Democrat Joe McCulloch by a final vote tally of 6,771 to 6,506.
A string of problems which took place on election day led to the delay in results. Malfunctioning machines (or too few at some precincts) led to long lines and people casting ballots hours after the polls closed. A broken scanner stopped vote counting in the middle of the night, and that effort didn't resume until mid Wednesday morning.
McCulloch was leading after the electronic ballots were counted, but was edged out when absentees were tabulated.
Finlay would take over for Jim Harrison, who didn't seek re-election. Finlay, a local restaurateur, previously served on the Columbia City Council and ran unsuccessfully for Columbia mayor in 2010.
The race will be certified after provisional ballots are counted on Friday.
