Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Richland County Deputies have arrested a man involved in a domestic violence incident that occured Saturday morning on the 1500 block of Crossing Creek Road.

According to reports, officials say just before 3am, a verbal altercation turned physical between 42-year-old Joe Bales and his girlfriend.

Deputies say Bales' sister, who was also residing in the residence, heard the argument and ran downstairs to stop it.

According to deputies, the sister had a handgun and when Bales became physical with her and tried to take the gun, she shot him.

Deputies say the sister will not be charged because she fired the gun in self defense.

Bales faces a Criminal Domestic Violence charge against his girlfriend and an Aggravated Assault charge against his sister.

Both the Bales and his sister were transported to Palmetto Richland Hospital. Their condition is unknown at this time.
