Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The SC Bar Association's Pro Bono Program launched a new website this week for the public to access free legal help.
SCLawAnswers.org allows individuals who meet certain financial and legal qualifications can have their legal questions answered by volunteer lawyers through the website.
It's accessible around the clock, and topics include consumer law issues, benefits, health care, family law, work related issues, and more.
The lawyers online will be able to see the identity of the person asking the question, which is necessary to check for conflicts prohibited by the state Rules of Professional Conduct, but the questioners are reminded the lawyers are only answering questions asked, and do not represent the client in any way.
Cindy Coker, the SC Bar Association's Public Services Director, said "We are excited about the launch of SCLawAnswers.org and thrilled to be providing this much-needed resource to the citizens of South Carolina... The website provides convenient access to legal help, and allows the public another avenue to the legal system in a simplified and non-intimidating manner."
The new website is designed only for civil questions on the topics noted above.
Any questions regarding criminal topics or subjects need to refer to the local public defender.
