Thomas Stafford appears during a bond hearing on December 4, 2012.
Lexington County, SC (WLTX) - The man arrested in connection with the death of a South Carolina Department of Transportation worker had been arrested for DUI just weeks before.
Thomas Stafford, 39, was charged Tuesday with felony DUI and leaving the scene involving death.
The charges are in connection with the death of 21-year-old Nicholas Johnson. Troopers say Stafford's SUV collided with Johnson as he was doing work on a bridge on Interstate 20 Monday.
Stafford's criminal record from the State Law Enforcement shows he was arrested for DUI back on November 19th. He was previously been convicted of a DUI that took place in 2008.
Stafford was denied bond at a court appearance Tuesday afternoon.
Johnson's mother and grandmother atteneding the hearing. Through a spokeswoman the family asked that bond for Stafford be denied, calling him a flight risk and a threat to the community.
