(WLTX) --- Ellis Johnson was not without a job for long.

The former USC defensive coordinator who spent just one season as the head coach at Southern Miss has been hired to be Auburn's next defensive coordinator.

The move comes less than two weeks after Johnson was fired following the worst season in Golden Eagle football history.

In Johnson's only season at Southern Miss, the Golden Eagles went 0-12.

Auburn will reportedly pay Johnson $800,000 annually for three years.

Johnson is a Winnsboro native who has extensive experience coaching in the SEC with stops at Alabama and Mississippi State.

He is also a former head coach at the Citadel.

Johnson left USC after the 2011 season to take over the program at Southern Miss where Johnson had previously served as an assistant and considered that program his dream job.

But the season turned into a nightmare and after a winless season, Johnson was fired.

However, his previous success as a coordinator meant that he would have several offers coming his way and he settled on an Auburn program that has a new head coach in Gus Malzahn.
