Rembert, SC (WLTX) -- The South Carolina Department of Corrections continues to search for an inmate who escaped from their prison.

SCDC spokesperson Clark Newsom said Saturday around 4:40 p.m. officers at the Wateree River Correctional Institution noticed 34-year-old Andrew McElrath was missing.

Newsom said McElrath has been in custody since September 23 for the unauthorized use of a vehicle. He was serving time of a year and three months.

Newsom said the Wateree River Correctional Institution is a medium-security prison. SLED, Kershaw County Sheriff's Department and Sumter Police are involved in the search.

He also added they aren't sure of how McElrath was able to escape.

If you see McElrath you're urged to call your local law enforcement agency.
