Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Thursday the City of Columbia Design/ Development Review Commission voted to deny the site plan and certificate application for a developer who wants to demolish the Palmetto Compress Building in order to build student housing.

The board voted 8-1 in oposition of the developers plan. Board members cited that the plan did not meet certian requirements for approval according to the Innovista guidelines.

More than 100 residents attended the meeting and many were in oposition of demolishing the Compress Building.

The Palmetto Compress Building is listed in the National Registry of Historic Buildings in the United States.

One main issue arose in during the meeting about how potential student residents would cross the nearby railroad tracks safely in order to get to class.  The developer proposed building a bridge with an elevator on both sides that will allow students to travel safely to USC's campus.

The board says the developer can resubmit a new plan for approval. If the deloper chooses to continue with the project, board members say it will take several months before coming before the development board again.
