Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia police have charged a woman they say tried to join their ranks---but who used a fake diploma to do it.

LaKeisha Danielle Bowman, 31, is charged with forgery.

Officers say Bowman applied to become a member of the department.

According to investigators, she gave CPD's recruiting officer a diploma that said she's received a degree in criminal justice from ITT Technical Institute in June of 2009.

However, the recruiting officer became suspicious because the word "prescribed" was spelled "prescrilbed" on the document.

The officer then did some checking and found out the fake document had been bought online for $100, according to officers.
