Columbia, SC (WLTX) - City of Columbia officials have named Ruben Santiago as the interim police chief of the Columbia Police Department.

Santiago was sworn in Monday morning at 9 a.m.

Last Saturday, Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott announced that he would retire on New Year's Eve. However, Scott's retirement is temporary: he expects to reapply for the position in 15 days. Previous Coverage: Randy Scott to Retire

In a letter to department employees, Scott explained that he was stepping down because of a change to the South Carolina police retirement system.

Santiago has been with the Columbia Police Department since December of 2010, and has served as deputy chief of operations. Prior to joining CPD, he'd been a captain with the Richland County Sheriff's Department.
