Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Lillian McBride is resigning as the Richland County Elections Director.

The election commission announced Thursday that McBride had submitted a letter to them announcing her intentions. The resignation will be effective January 12th.

McBride was under fire for her office's performance in the November 6th general election. People had to wait as long as seven hours to cast their ballot.

An interim report written by the commission's attorney said there were over 200 fewer machines than needed at the polls that day. Report: Plenty of Blame for Richland County Election Mess

"I have decided it would be difficult for me to continue in that role moving forward," McBride wrote in her letter. "In taking this action I accept fully the responsibility for what occurred during the election on November 6, 2012."

On December 19th, it appeared McBride had resigned, when Rep. Todd Rutherford told reporters that she'd agreed to step down. Just hours later, however, McBride issued a statement denying those reports.

Dr. Jasper Salmond has been named acting executive director. The commission members said he will not be a candidate for the full-time position.

The board also recognized McBride for her 20 years of service. McBride also said that she would like to continue on in some role with the agency.

Election Commission Chair Liz Crum stepped down last month, three months earlier that she originally intended. In doing so, Crum said she had "no confidence" in McBride's ability to manage the office.

Here is the full text of McBride's resignation:

Dear Mr. Dowdy:

It has been my pleasure to serve as the Executive Director of the Richland County Elections and Voter Registration Office for the past year and a half. However, I have decided it would be difficult for me to continue in that role moving forward. Accordingly, I shall relinquish my duties and responsibilities and leave my current position as Executive Director effective January 12, 2013. In taking this action I accept fully the responsibility for what occurred during the election on November 6, 2012.

I am deeply appreciative to you, the Board and the Richland County Legislative Delegation for the opportunity you gave me for professional development during the past eighteen months I have spent in this position. I have learned so much from my time as Director, and I have enjoyed working with the dedicated and hard working people in the Office. We all share the desire of the Richland County citizens for confidence in this Office and in Richland County elections, and in the will to implement improvements to address the difficulties we encountered on November 6. I believe my action today is an important step in that direction.

I would welcome an opportunity to continue to serve the Elections and Voter Registration Office in some capacity, particularly utilizing my knowledge, experience, and skills in voter registration. I offer my continued service to the Office in any manner that the new Director or the Board sees fit.

In closing, I truly appreciate the support I have received from this Board, the employees within the Office, and members of the Richland County community.

With kind regards,

Sincerely

Lillian McBride
