Columbia, SC (WLTX) - With all "ayes" and no "nays" Thursday night at the Richland Election Commission board meeting, Dr. Jasper Salmond was appointed the new Interim Executive Director of the Commission.
The current title belongs to Lillian McBride, who handed the board her letter of resignation Thursday. The letter comes nearly two months after several problems at the polls on and after the November 6th elections including long lines, a lack of voting machines and missing votes.
Since the elections, McBride had come under severe scrutiny of how she handled the situation; however, the board continues to stand by McBride's record during her two decades with the agency. She had overseen county voter registration before being promoted to Executive director in 2011, a promotion that increased her salary from roughly $66,000 annually to roughly $89,000.
The board recommends that McBride once again be placed in her previous position, a decision that Dr. Salmond would have to make.
"I move that the board publicly acknowledge the over 20-years of service of Lillian McBride in the voter registration office in Richland County," said board member Adell Adams, "and that the board work with the acting director to place Ms. McBride in a suitable position on the staff to avail the board and the public of her many years of service to the board of voter registration."
McBride's temporary replacement, Dr. Jasper Salmond, has an extensive resume including a former school principal, serving as leader for Richland School District One, the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, and was awarded The Order of the Palmetto.
Salmond will be earning $4,500 per month, and the board feels moving Salmond into the temporary position will be beneficial to all.
"He is a very credible, very stable," said Allen Dowdy, acting Richland County Election Chair. "The very person who will bring to this election and voter registration office and to the public at large... to let them know that we are concerned about doing the right thing and we will be working as diligently as possible."
News19 inquired what McBride's salary would be if placed in another role; however, we have not received an answer yet.
The board will look for candidates to fill the position of Executive Director immediately and is set to meet again on January 9th.
