Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A teacher at Dreher High School has been charged with sexual battery of a student.
Police say they served the warrant on 34-year-old Kinsley Wentzky Friday afternoon, and a judge issued a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.
According to a Columbia police press release, Wentzky allegedly engaged in sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old male student at a Columbia home on several occasions.
An arrest warrant obtained from CPD says Wentzky provided a statement to Forest Acres Police admitting to having sexual intercourse with the student. The warrant also states that the relationship allegedly began in the spring of 2011. Investigators are trying to determine the length of the relationship.
The specific charge against Wentzky is sexual battery with a student 16 or 17 years of age, which is outlined below:
SC Code Of Law 16-3-755 Section B:
(B) If a person affiliated with a public or private secondary school in an official capacity engages in sexual battery with a student enrolled in the school who is sixteen or seventeen years of age, and aggravated coercion or aggravated force is not used to accomplish the sexual battery, the person affiliated with the public or private secondary school in an official capacity is guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, must be imprisoned for not more than five years.
Wentzky is an English teacher with the school. According to the school's website, she's in her seventh year of teaching at Dreher, but has been teaching for about 10 years.
According to law enforcement, the school district was alerted to the situation by a parent while on winter break on Dec. 27th, and the school district immediately contacted law enforcement.
Wentzky is now on administrative leave with pay.
