Lex. H.S. Employee on Leave During "Inappropriate E-Mail" Inquest

Columbia, SC (WLTX)--A Lexington High school employee is on paid administrative leave while District One school officials investigate an "inappropriate e-mail" sent from the employee's account, according to the district. 

On Sunday, January 6, 2013, several Lexington High school employees reported receiving inappropriate e-mail from a Lexington High school employee.  The email was a "chain mail" type joke with inappropriate humor and images according to Mary Beth Hill, chief communications officer with Lexington School District One.   

Administrators at the school and district level immediately began a through investigation. As with any investigation, it is important that the district not jump to any conclusions but, rather, to act in accordance with Board Policy and district procedure, according to Hill. 

Among other things, the policy requires that staff immediately report any message they receive that they feel is inappropriate or that makes them feel uncomfortable.

It is the practice of the district, for the protection of both the district and the employee, to place an employee on paid administrative leave while an investigation is conducted.

Since the use of technology is a privilege, not a right, the district has Board Policy IJNB Use of Technology Resources in Instruction, commonly referred to as the Acceptable Use Policy, which prohibits the inappropriate use of technology.
