Austin, TX (WLTX) - News19 Chief Meteorologist Jim Gandy is this year's winner of an award for work to educate viewers on climate change.
The American Meteorological Society honored Gandy with their "Excellence in Science Reporting by a Broadcast Meteorologist."
News19 viewers know Jim does a recurring segment called "Climate Matters," where he explains how meteorological changes affect them.
One of those segments covered poison ivy and climate change, based on a Duke University study that shows poison ivy grows faster and becomes more toxic as carbon dioxide increases in the atmosphere. Watch Jim's Segment
Jim is only the seventh recipient of this award.
Climate Matters was a test case for a project by the Center for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University. There are now two research papers undergoing peer-review that relates directly to the program and will be published next year.
