Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Twenty-two people in South Carolina have died from flu related illnesses between September 30, 2012 and January 5, 2013, according to the Department of Health and Environmental Control.
Only one flu-related death was reported in South Carolina by DHEC between October 2, 2011 and July 7, 2012.
The state is listed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as having widespread flu activity.
A DHEC report says there have been 1084 lab-confirmed hospitalizations involving the flu since September 30.
The CDC says there are high levels of flu-like-illnesses being reported around the country this flu season. There's concerns that this year's vaccine is not protecting against a specific strain of the flu that's out there. Doctors believe that strain is the one that's causing most of the trouble this year, however they still recommend everyone get a flu shot.
