Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia police have arrested a man they say escaped from a police car in Five Points, and have also charged several people they say helped him after the crime.
Michael Juan Carrell, 20, is charged with escape, resisting arrest, providing false information to police, possession of alcohol by person under the age of 21, drunkenness, malicious injury to property, and petit larceny.
Around 2 a.m. on New Year's Day, officers took Carrell into custody and put him in a police vehicle. The arresting officer then went to help another officer who trying to break up a fight in the area.
While the officer was gone, however, police say Carrell kicked out the back glass of the police cruiser and ran from the scene.
A Crimestoppers tip eventually led officers to Carrell.
Officers have also arrested 27-year-old Amber Dean, 27-year-old Keith Allen Hood, and 20-year-old Melissa Rose Hood with accessory after the fact.
Police say they helped Carrell by using a grinder tool to cut the chain off of the police handcuffs. The suspects also allegedly used an old handcuff key to completely remove the police handcuffs from Carrell's wrists.
