Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Schools across the nation and here in the Midlands are looking at ways to increase security in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
Columbia's Interim Police chief Ruben Santiago was at Imagine Columbia Leadership Academy Friday to announce a new school safety initiative. It's called "Standard Response Protocol," a nationally recognized program.
Santiago says the program adds to existing school safety plans.
The department plans on expanding the program to daycares, private, and public schools.
