Chapin, SC (WLTX)- Someone is throwing rocks off Midlands bridges and highways injuring motorists and damaging vehicles, and the Richland County Sheriff's Department is looking for the person responsible.
"If I had a child in a car seat, that child would be dead right now," said Monica, who was injured and her car was damaged when a huge rock landed on her windshield after it was thrown from an overpass.
Monica and her friend Lynn were coming home after a girl's night out when they passed under a bridge near exit 94 on I-26.
That's when they heard a loud noise.
A large rock had gone through Monica's windshield.
"It was a horrible experience that I would not wish on anyone," said Monica. "I could have lost control of the car and hit other cars, it is so serious and devastating."
The rock crashed through the windshield and struck Monica's arm and then flew into the back seat hitting another passenger.
"Why would someone do this to someone? We could have been killed. Thank God we had a guardian angel that night and it came between us," said Lynn.
This isn't the first time this has happened according to investigators. Earlier this week another car was struck by a rock thrown in Columbia. The Sheriffs department says that they believe the incidents are connected.
"I distinctly remember a white pickup truck on the overpass when we went under it," said Monica. "It is unbelievable that it happened at all, you hear about it but you don't think it will happen in your own backyard when you are just minding your business driving home."
"This person is out there and we need anyone who might have seen something to call Richland County Sheriff's Department and report it," said Lynn.
