Hopkins, SC (WLTX) - Some Midlands elementary school students couldn't make the trip to Washington for the inauguration so they held an inaugural ball in Hopkins.

"This is going to be his second inauguration and this is the 57th annual inauguration," said 4th grader Diamond Edmonds.

One of the most watched American traditions is seeing the new president take the oath of office.

"I love inaugurations," said Edmonds.

And even though the inauguration won't be until Monday, students at Horrell Hill Elementary School celebrated early with their 2nd Inaugural Ball.

"The red carpet and everything, this is my first red carpet event but I think I did good, " said Edmonds.

"They have participated in the election at Horrell Hill," said reading teacher, Mary Jade Haney.

Haney says the students have been learning about the election process and what an inauguration is.

"I think it is very important for them to know that they have a voice. They all know, if you go around and ask kids how old you have to be to vote," said Haney.

"You have to be 18 to vote," said Edmonds.

At the ball students talked about what is a leader. Edmonds says President Obama is one of her favorite leaders.

"A leader is someone who speaks out over the crowd and doesn't care about what everyone one else says."
