She was born in 1925 to Thurmond and her mother, Carrie Butler, who at the time worked as the Thurmond family's maid. Butler was black, and Thurmond, who's spent much of his early political career as a staunch segregationist, never admitted publicly to fathering Washington-Williams.
Washington-Williams herself did not find out who her father was until she was 16, and decided she would keep silent on her true lineage as well. That all ended in December of 2003, when she revealed six months after her father's death the truth, and recalled the letters and money he had given her over the years.
Thurmond served South Carolina for over 50 years as governor and a U.S. Senator.
The public viewing for Mrs. Essie Mae Washington Williams will be held from 1 to 5 Friday and again from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m at the Leevy's Funeral Home on Taylor Street in Columbia.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Brookland Baptist Church, 1066 Sunset Boulevard.
