Sumter, SC (WLTX) - An elderly couple is dead after a house fire in Sumter County.
It happened Thursday night at a home on Highway 261 just outside of Wedgefield. Eight-seven-year-old Edward Hall and his 83-year-old wife Harriett died in that fire.
When firefighters arrived at the home, it was fully engulfed in flames.
We're told Edward dragged his wife out of the home and then went back inside to recover something before he died.
The coroner say they both died from burns and smoke inhalation.
The home was built in the 1800's, pre-dating the Civil War. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
