Columbia, SC (WLTX) - This week two fires have started in dryers from something that everyone has in their home.
Lint lurking in your dryer's vents and lint trap burns faster than paper and is a danger because of wires in the dryer and clothes hanging close by.
For that reason, it's essential to clean lint from your dryer's ducts and lint trap.
"You have to install properly," said Brick Lewis with the Columbia Fire Department. "If that means you bring someone in, but you just want to make sure you follow the guidelines they set for that product."
Lewis says you are the best defense in keeping your dryer fire free.
"At least once a year, you want to clean the tube that vents out to the outside of the home. There's also a flap on the outside. Every time it's operating, you want to make sure that opens up," said Lewis.
Consumer Reports tested a new infomercial product called the Lint Lizard that promises to help.
It attaches to your vacuum cleaner and threads into the dryers lint trap.
"The lint lizard worked really well. It removed more lint than any other technique we tried," said Bernie Deitrick of Consumer Reports.
Consumer Reports says the Lint Lizard may not fit easily into narrow dryer openings because of it's sharp tip.
Most important though, clean your lint trap every time you use the dryer in an easy effort to prevent a tragedy.
