Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Eight months ago we introduced you to nine year-old Tate Crawford, a die-hard Gamecocks fan living in Nebraska.

"They did a bunch for me and I just wanted to give back to them by raising money for the two foundations," said Tate Crawford.

Not many 9-year olds can say they are friends with a legend like Ray Tanner.

"He said welcome to South Carolina. Because at the college world series I said welcome to Nebraska," said Crawford.

Since birth Crawford has preferred a different shade of red, despite being in Cornhusker country.

"It's been more about South Carolina than about Tate," said Tate's mother Kristen.

"He lives in Nebraska, he adopted the Gamecocks and we adopted him," said Athletic Director Ray Tanner.

Tate was so thankful for Coach Tanner and the Gamecocks for inspiring him.  So Tate decided to help touch the lives of those who really need it.

"You should help other people out. I kind of just wanted to give, it feels good to do it," said Crawford.

Knowing that Ray Tanner and Coach Holbrook both have charities that help sick children, Tate decided to raise money so that he could donate a check to both foundations.

"At school you learn about a lot of stuff but you need to learn about giving."

He mailed letters to family and friends asking for donations. His mother, Kristen, says it warms her heart to know that her son is a giver.

"We were shocked by the envelopes we would get in the mail," said Kristen.

More than $2,500 worth of donations from a little boy who has no family ties to the university or the state,  it's something Tanner says is remarkable.

"It's just so heartwarming that he understands what's going on at such a young age and his vision to help other people is just incredible," said Tanner.

Tate says it makes him feel good to raise money for kids his age who aren't able to do some of the things he gets to enjoy.

"It was really cool and was a good experience," said Crawford.

So you may ask what's next for Tate? Just ask his mother, "Saving for Tate's college because he declared he is a Gamecock."
