Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A police report given to News19 Tuesday says the victim of a Richland County Jail assault had "several internal injuries".

Former corrections officer Robin Smith, 37, is charged with Assault and Battery of a High and Aggravated Nature.

Police say he stomped on inmate Robert Sweeper, who was booked at the Richland County Jail February 7 for a trespassing charge at USC.

Deputies say Sweeper was beaten at the Richland County Jail 4 days later on February 11.  Then on February 15, deputies say Sweeper was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

Smith has been terminated for failing to follow jail policies.

The Richland County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the incident.

The jail is also conducting its own internal review.
