Barbara Scott, Richland One School Board member
COLUMBIA, SC (WLTX) Barbara Scott, Richland One School Board member, died Tuesday, according to a release from the school district.
Scott was born in Florence, and moved to Columbia when she was very young, she attend Columbia public schools and was a USC graduate.
She has been the office manager of the law firm, Kirkland, Aaron and Alley for 29 1/2 years. She was the founding member of the Columbia Legal Secretaries Association and served as the vice president and treasurer of the SC legal Secretaries Association. She took the Professional Legal Secretary exam and passed on the first attempt.
According to the district, Scott was first elected to the Board of School Commissioners in 1974 and served for eight years and for three of those years she was the chairman.
Scott was elected to be the Richland County Clerk of Court in 1984.
In 2008 Scott became a school board member when she won a four-year term to one of the at-large seats. She was re-elected to the seat in November 2012.
"Mrs. Scott's presence on the Board and her commitment to ensuring that all Richland One students receive a high-quality education will be greatly missed," said a statement from the district. "The entire Richland One family extends its heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Scott's family, friends and other loved ones."
Barbara Scott leaves behind a husband, Paul H. Pickens, four daughters and nine grandchildren.
