Norway, SC (WLTX) - Former Norway Mayor Jim Preacher--who created controversy during a traffic stop with a state trooper--has died, according to a report in the Orangeburg Times & Democrat.
The paper says Preacher died Sunday night of a heart attack.
During his career Preacher had served a Norway police chief, Ehrhardt police chief, and mayor.
His time in office wasn't without controversy. He was fired as Norway police chief in 2007, then won the mayor's office two years later. However, he had to give the job up quickly, after it was discovered he was also serving as the Ehrhardt police chief.
Preacher then won back his seat as town mayor in 2011.
In January of 2012, he got into trouble when he was pulled over by a state trooper. After the trooper ticketed him, Preacher pulled the trooper over. At the time, he said he was working as a constable.
However, the State Law Enforcement Division said Preacher was not a valid constable, and charged him with impersonating a police officer and misconduct in office.
Governor Nikki Haley then suspended him from office after his indictment in last August.
Funeral arrangements for Preacher were not immediately available.
