Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The South Carolina Forestry Commission's Red Flag Fire Weather Alert remains in effect statewide.
The SC Forestry Commission issued the alert Friday around midnight for the entire state. It issues Red Flags when weather conditions make the spread of fire more favorable, when outdoor activities are expected to rise due to warmer and more pleasant weekend weather, and when allocation of agency resources is strained.
As of Saturday night, the total number of fires statewide was 64, with 21 fires still active. Regionally, there were 24 coastal fires (six of which were still active); in the Pee Dee, 21 fires (of which six were still active); and in the Piedmont, 19 fires (of which 9 were still active).
A Red Flag Fire Weather Alert does not outlaw debris burning in most areas, but it's an advisory which strongly encourages people to postpone burning. According to the Commission, nearly half of all wildfires in our state begin as escaped debris burns.
