Columbia, SC (WLTX) - State incentive documents suggest a new distribution center for Ross Stores Inc. will cost taxpayers $22 million over the next 15 years.
WLTX.com news partner TheNerve.org reports the distribution center will bring 597 jobs with an average taxpayer cost of nearly $37,000 per job over the 15 year period.
"So, we're spending lots of tax dollars to bring this project here to create average wages that are even less than the per capita income," said reporter Rick Brundrett. "Because these agreements are released months, if not a year later, after the project is announced, taxpayers, even if they disagree with how their tax dollars are being spent, don't have any recourse."
Thenerve.org reports Ross Stores 2012 revenues were at least $3.8 billion dollars more than South Carolina's general fund revenues last fiscal year.
