Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A state grand jury indicted the Chesterfield County sheriff on claims he used inmates to do personal work for him.
Sanford "Sam" Parker Jr. is charged with four counts of misconduct in office and two counts of furnishing contraband to inmates.
The misconduct charges are misdemeanors, while the contraband offense is a felony.
According to the indictment, Parker allowed Department of Corrections inmates to live outside jail, go shopping, and eat at public restaurants. In exchange, the indictment states, the inmates worked at Parker's house and assisted with special events and performing work within the sheriff's department.
