Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - The San Francisco 49ers filled their
kicking void Tuesday by signing veteran Phil Dawson to a one-year contract.
The reigning NFC champions released 38-year-old David Akers earlier this month
and replaced him with the 38-year-old Dawson, who had spent his entire 14-year
career with the Cleveland Browns.
Dawson made the Pro Bowl last year for the first time after connecting on 29-
of-31 field goals, including a perfect 7-of-7 from beyond 50 yards.
"We are excited to add an accomplished veteran like Phil to our team," said
49ers general manager Trent Baalke. "Phil has performed at a high level
throughout his career and has a lot of experience managing the elements, which
is a valuable asset."
Dawson's 84.0 career field goal percentage ranks ninth in NFL history.
