Columbia, SC (WLTX)  - Fort Jackson has suspended its community "Meet Your Neighbor" night scheduled for April 23 because of  budget cuts.

The popular community program invited local residents to come and watch soldier training, including a live fire nighttime exercise, where visitors could use night vision goggles to watch the soldier.

The daytime event "Meet Your Army," scheduled for May 16, is currently under review.

Officials at the fort did not know whether other programs like the Torchlight Tattoo, the fireworks display and celebration would go on. "We will continue to plan those events until told not to," said Pat Jones, a spokesman for Fort Jackson. "If the community has questions they can call us at 751-5327, to check on events."  He also said that so far soldier support at funerals has not been impacted yet.

"As always we try to be good stewards of the taxpayer's dollars. We are just cutting close to the bone  to make sure we are doing everything we can."
