Newberry County, SC (WLTX) - Authorities are looking for a tractor-trailer which set off a series of accidents that briefly closed part of Interstate 26 Saturday.
Officials with the Newberry County Sheriff's Office sent out an alert shortly after 12 p.m. for motorists to avoid I-26 West between the 82 and 85 mile markers following multiple motor vehicle collisions. These are around the interstate exits for SC 773 to Prosperity and SC 202 to Little Mountain, respectively.
Newberry Sheriff Lee Foster says the initial accident occurred when a tractor-trailer changed lanes and cut off another vehicle, which caused a series of accidents. Then, Foster says Saturday's poor weather conditions contributed to even more wrecks as other motorists attempted to avoid the previous collisions. Though crews cleared the roadway within a few hours, Foster says about 8-10 vehicles were involved, not counting the tractor-trailer which left the scene.
There were no serious injuries.
