Columbia, SC (WLTX)-  Compounding pharmacies have gotten some attention in recent months and that may have you wondering just what are they.

Last year there was a nationwide outbreak of fungal meningitis, which was believe to have been caused by contaminated steroid injections distributed by a Compounding Center. Health officials say some of those injections were given to patients in our state.

There has also been several recalls of drugs produced at similar facilities. All of this has patients concerned with the safety of their prescription medication.

South Carolina College of Pharmacy Pharmacist, Kathy Quarles Moore says compounding pharmacies can offer something different than your usual drug store.

"If a patient is allergic to an ingredient in a manufactured product they would compound something that would be more beneficial to them," said Quarles Moore.

Nancy Taylor, a lab coordinator at USC recommends taking a look inside.

"If you have fears and concerns just go look for yourself, a lot of compounding pharmacies have windows that you can look through," said Taylor.

The Food and Drug Administration doesn't regulate compounding pharmacies but the South Carolina State Board of pharmacy does.

"Our state board consists of pharmacists and inspectors that come out and regulate pharmacies and we have an annual inspections." said Taylor.
