Sumter, SC (WLTX)- Sumter County Sheriff's deputies say a Sumter man punched an elderly man in the face and ran from police before being arrested.

Deputies say it happened on Blossom Lane Saturday Afternoon. Deputies say the victim, an 83-year-old man and his wife, were leaving their home when 23-year-old Akeem Logan approached them and began to ask for directions.

The victim's wife rolled down the window to let the offender speak to her husband and that's when deputies say he punched the elderly man in the face causing lacerations and broken dental work.

A witness on the scene called 9-1-1.

When deputies arrived they tried to stop Logan and officials say he was being uncooperative and a deputy shot him with his taser, but he was unsuccessful in making contact.

Multiple deputies arrived on scene, a second deputy deployed a taser but Logan still remained uncooperative.

Deputies then sent Canine Officer Mike after Logan, but they called him back because of too many innocent bystanders in the area.

Deputies fired three beanbag rounds from a shotgun and were finally able to subdue him and take him in custody.

Logan was taken to Toumey for injuries sustained during the incident.

Logan is charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
