Fire Damages Sumter Businesses; Firefighter Hurt

Sumter, SC (WLTX) - A fire Tuesday afternoon damaged a several Sumter businesses and left a firefighter hurt.

The blaze took place at a building at the corner of Sumter and Liberty Streets that houses several shops, including Silbets Drugs and Reliable Pawn.

Firefighters say most of the damage was to the Discount Flower store. The damage estimate is around $300,000.

A Sumter firefighter was injured when he fell through the roof of the flower store, and was taken to Toumey Hospital. Fire Chief Brian Horton says the firefighter has a minor ankle injury.

It's unclear what sparked the blaze.

The building is well-known in the city, and includes a mural on the side that was painted by noted South Carolina artist Blue Sky.
