Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The Riverbanks Zoo set their all-time single day attendance record this month.

The attraction set the record on April 6th, when 12,979 people came through the turnstiles.

Overall, 55,175 people visited the zoo the first week of April.

"The numbers are impressive," said Satch Krantz, president and CEO of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. "In one day alone, crowds in the park totaled more than the number of people living in the city of Cayce."

During peak season, the zoo usually averages 9,800 people a day.

The zoo says they're looking to develop additional parking as part of a $32 million expansion.
