Waco, TX (CBS NEWS) A major explosion at a burning fertilizer plant was reported early Wednesday evening in West, north of Waco, with emergency crews sent to the scene, according to CBS affiliate KWTX Waco.
In addition, numerous injuries were reported along with several buildings destroyed.
Spokesperson Gayle Scarbrough for the Department of Public Safety said troopers brought some of the victims to hospitals in patrol cars.
There are also reports of people trapped in a nursing home that was damaged and in an apartment building.
The explosion also caused a power outage to a wide area of the community.
Tonya Harris of Groesbeck said she heard the explosion. "My husband and l were cleaning up the kitchen after supper," she wrote in an email, "and heard what we thought was someone running into our house. It shook our windows and doors. We immediately ran outside looking for the worst."
