LADSON, S.C. (AP) - A Ladson woman has been arrested and accused of causing her 17-month-old child's death last year.
Twenty-one-year-old Lorena Contreras-Castillo was charged Wednesday with homicide by child abuse.
Charleston County sheriff's Maj. Jim Brady says Contreras-Castillo was arrested by U.S. marshals.
A warrant says the woman had taken the child to the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital on Aug. 5 saying the child had passed out. Nurses reported the child seemed active and playful.
The child was released Aug. 8. Less than six hours later, paramedics were called to the woman's home and found the child unresponsive. The child died Aug. 13.
An affidavit says it appears the child was smothered.
It was not clear if Contreras-Castillo has an attorney.
